Illuminating Facts on LEDs
by Andrea Hart & Brandon Conard
The benefits of LED lights are now widely touted. But it was not until recently that the parts that make an LED light efficient became cost effective enough to be considered a viable alternative to mainstream lighting. Let us, if you will, shine some light on the benefits and disadvantages of these bulbs.
LED lights are ultimately more cost effective than their incandescent or fluorescent counterparts for several reasons. First, they use less energy. This means there are huge savings when it comes to your monthly electric bill, which will certainly brighten your day. Second, LEDs have a longer life span with a quoted 50,000 hours, compared to 10,000-15,000 with fluorescents or metal halide, so forget stocking up the supply closet with additional bulbs. Their extended lifespan also means reduced maintenance costs. Third, LEDs do not have the levels of toxins found in previous bulbs that used mercury or sodium. Due to these benefits of LEDs, the city of New York chose LEDs for the next generation of its city lights. LED's are also the perfect choice for exit signs and Christmas lights. They also make good mood lighting in restaurants and clubs.
While there are plenty of great reasons to switch over to LEDs, there are some drawbacks. One being that LEDs remain initially more expensive to purchase. However, what you spend on the initial bulb is quickly returned in energy savings. Also, LEDs tend to be somewhat cool blue in color, versus a warmer yellow light. And while this bulb does produce plenty of light, it is emitted more directionally than spread out the way incandescent and fluorescent lights do. This means it is not perfect for lighting a large area like a living room.
Nevertheless, more and more technology based around LEDs continues to emerge, meaning the bulbs will just keep getting more cost effective. In fact, many lighting companies have stalled research on other bulbs in order to focus more of LED development. Accordingly, in the right settings, LED lighting provides a great way to cut costs as well contribute towards becoming more environmental sustainable.
